Nigeria Ranked 112th in Just Released 2013 Global Press Freedom

The yearly World Press Freedom Index has ranked Nigeria 112th in the world, among nations where the media are seen as partly free. The latest ranking only moved Nigeria three steps up, as it was ranked 115th in 2013. The Paris based media rights watch-dog, Reporters Without Borders defines the partly free countries as those characterised by some restrictions on political rights and civil liberties, often in a context of corruption, weak rule of law, ethnic strife or civil war. Namibia, Cape Verde and Ghana are three African nations listed among the top 30 nations where the press is free. Ghana is rated 27, Namibia, 22, Cape Verde 24. And scores of other African nations fared better than Nigeria. South Africa, Niger, Botswana, Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra-Leone, Liberia, Uganda, Benin, Togo, Kenya and even crisis-torn Central African Republic were rated above Nigeria. Gay: We’ll Won’t Stop Pressing Until Nigeria Changes Law – US

United States has said that its condemnation of gay marriage law in Nigeria and other African countries does not amount to interference. The action, according to Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa is to ensure that people under whatever guise were not denied their human rights. Thomas-Greenfield, who spoke on Tuesday during the live-web chat monitored in Abuja, said US will continue to impress it on the government and the legislators on the need to give everyone equal opportunity. She noted that US is just against legislations that is targeted against gay people. The Assistant Secretary of State also insisted that American government supports human rights for all the people. She said, ” As a policy we will continue to press the government of Nigeria and other governments and the legislature to change this law and provide human rights to all Nigerians regardless of their s*xual orientation.’’

Nigerian Singer Oritse Femi Loses Dad

Oritse Femi who became popular after his hit single, ‘Mercies of the Lord’, which had late Dagrin on the remix has lost his dad. The singer lost his dad, after his father who sources said was hale and hearty suddenly slumped yesterday afternoon, Monday, 10th of Feb., 2014 and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later gave up the ghost. He was 62. The singer also announced through his twitter page that he just lost his dad. May his soul rest in peace.
